Can I be really honest with you today? 💛
Not polished-Rebecca honest. Not put-together-Bible-teacher honest. I mean the kind of honest that costs something to say out loud.
I had idols. And for a long time, I did not even recognize them for what they were.
The word idol can make us think of ancient statues and pagan altars. But God has been teaching me that an idol is simply anything we put in the place that only He was meant to fill. And when I held my own life up to that definition — I had to sit down.
Because mine were not made of gold or stone. Mine looked completely normal from the outside. Mine looked like responsibility. Like productivity. Like keeping it all together.
The first was work.
I became a workaholic. Not because I loved my job more than my family — but because work kept me away from home. It kept me busy. It kept me moving. And as long as I was moving, I did not have to feel the things that were waiting for me when I stopped.
What I did not realize until much later was the damage that was being done. To my children. To my relationships. To my own soul. I was so busy running away from something that I never stopped to run toward the One who could have healed it.
I wish with everything in me that I had built a relationship with Christ instead. 💛
The second was comfort.
Everything I did was built around keeping myself comfortable — and that comfort was rooted in my past. In the wounds I had never dealt with. In the fears I had never handed over. I built walls and called them wisdom. I built distance and called it strength.
But God does not call us to be comfortable. He calls us to be surrendered. And those are two very different things.
The third was worry and control.
I was a worrier. A controller. I thought if I could just manage enough variables — if I could just stay one step ahead of the next hard thing — I could keep myself safe. But worry and control are exhausting masters. They never sleep. They never rest. And over time they became something I could no longer hide — they became anxiety.
And it was in the middle of that anxiety — in the middle of the exhaustion of trying to hold everything together — that God finally got through to me.
I did not have a relationship with Christ.
I knew about Him. I had heard about Him. But I did not know Him. And that realization — as painful as it was — was the beginning of everything changing.
Because here is what Jesus said:
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
— Matthew 6:21 NASB 💛
Whatever we treasure most — whatever we pour our time, our energy, our focus into — that is where our heart will live. And my heart had been living in work, in comfort, in control — in everything except the One who created it.
But here is the beauty of this Scripture. It works both ways. 🙏
If our heart follows our treasure — then when we begin to treasure Christ above everything else — our heart will follow Him there too. When we invest in His Word, in prayer, in knowing Him — our heart catches up. It always does.
Friend, I do not know what your idols look like today. Maybe they look like mine. Maybe they look completely different. But I want to ask you — gently and lovingly — what are you treasuring most right now?
Because whatever it is — your heart is right there with it.
And God loves you too much to leave you there. 💛
Today's Reflection: Ask God honestly today — "Lord, what am I treasuring more than You?" Then sit quietly and let Him answer. What He reveals is not meant to condemn you — it is meant to set you free. 🙏
— Rebecca 💛
