No More Excuses

Have you ever looked at the world around you and thought — what is happening?

“No More Excuses: What the Great Banquet Taught Me About Accountability”

Have you ever been invited somewhere and found every reason in the world not to go?

In Luke 14:15-24, Jesus tells a parable about a man who threw a great banquet. The invitations went out. The table was set. The food was ready. And one by one, every guest sent back the same message — I can’t come.

One had land to see. One had oxen to try. One had just gotten married.

Excuses. Every last one of them.

And here is what strikes me — none of them said “I don’t want to come.” They dressed their “no” up in something that sounded reasonable. Something that made them look responsible, busy, important. But underneath every excuse was a choice. And that choice revealed where their heart truly was.

Sound familiar?

Point 1 — No More Excuses

God’s economy turns the world’s thinking upside down. In the world, we make a bad choice and immediately reach for an excuse to cover it. We are wired for self-protection. But the guests in this parable weren’t just declining a dinner — they were declining the Lord Himself. And no amount of reasonable-sounding words changed that.

The truth is, an excuse is just a choice we aren’t ready to own.

Paul writes in Romans 1:20 — “so that they are without excuse.” God sees through every one of them. Not to shame us — but because He loves us too much to let us hide behind them.

What excuses have you been carrying? What invitations from God have you been politely declining?

Point 2 — Be Honest

Here’s where it gets real. My pastor pointed out something I haven’t been able to shake — when we make an excuse, we often add a lie on top of it to make ourselves look better. We take something that might have a sliver of truth and we dress it up until the truth is buried underneath.

We don’t just say “I didn’t want to do it.”
We say “I was too busy” — and then we add details that aren’t quite true to seal the deal.

Proverbs 12:17 tells us — “An honest witness tells the truth, but a false witness tells lies.”

Honesty — real, uncomfortable, courageous honesty — is an act of accountability. It says: I made this choice. I own it. I’m not going to dress it up.

That is freedom, sister. Real freedom.

Point 3 — Find the Solution

The beautiful twist in this parable? When the original guests said no, the master didn’t cancel the banquet. He said — go out into the streets, the highways, the hedges. Bring in everyone you find. My table WILL be full.

God doesn’t sit with the problem. He moves to the solution.

And that is exactly what He calls us to do. When we’ve made a bad choice — when we’ve offered an excuse instead of truth — the answer is not to stay in the excuse. It’s to turn around. Confess it. Make it right. Move forward.

1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The table is still set. The invitation is still open. It is never too late to say — Lord, I’m coming.

Sweet sister, this is the invitation.

Stop hiding behind what sounds good. Be honest about where you’ve been. And trust that the God who set the table will meet you right where you are — excuses and all.

His banquet has room for you. 🕯️

“Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.”
— Luke 14:23
